2026 Mazda CX-5: GX, GS, GT, or GT Premium—which trim should you choose?

03 August 2026 2026 Mazda CX-5: GX, GS, GT, or GT Premium—which trim should you choose?

The 2026 Mazda CX-5 marks a major change for this well-known compact SUV. Fully redesigned, it introduces a new generation with a longer body, a roomier interior, increased cargo space, and a new technology interface. For drivers in Chicoutimi and the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region, however, one important question remains: should you choose the GX, GS, GT, or GT Premium trim?

All trims share the same powertrain and all-wheel-drive system. The main differences therefore involve comfort, interior appointments, screen size, driver-assistance technologies, and everyday conveniences. This guide will help you identify the configuration that truly matches your driving needs and budget.

A fully redesigned 2026 Mazda CX-5

The 2026 CX-5 is not simply an updated version of the previous model. Its body is approximately 11.4 cm longer. Mazda has also increased the legroom, knee room, and headroom available to rear passengers, while significantly expanding the cargo area. The rear doors have also been redesigned to make it easier to access the second row.

These changes can make a noticeable difference in everyday life. Installing a child seat, loading sports bags, or preparing the vehicle for a weekend at the cottage is now easier. Despite its increased dimensions, the CX-5 retains a compact format that is well suited to the streets of Chicoutimi, shopping center parking lots, and regional travel.

The technology has evolved as well. The 2026 CX-5 is the first Mazda vehicle to offer Google built-in. Depending on the trim selected, the central touchscreen measures 12.9 or 15.6 inches. The latter is the largest central display ever installed in a Mazda vehicle.

One powertrain across all four trims

The GX, GS, GT, and GT Premium models are equipped with a 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder engine. It produces 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque and is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

i-Activ all-wheel drive is standard throughout the lineup. You therefore do not need to move up to a more expensive trim to benefit from all-wheel drive during Quebec winters. The stated fuel consumption is 9.9 L/100 km in the city, 7.9 L/100 km on the highway, and 9.0 L/100 km combined.

Because the mechanical components are identical, the decision mainly comes down to the level of equipment.

2026 Mazda CX-5 GX: the essentials without compromising on performance

The GX is the entry point to the lineup, with an announced starting MSRP of $36,300 before applicable fees and taxes. It is suited to drivers who want to enjoy the new generation of the CX-5 without paying for interior features and finishes they may not necessarily need.

Its equipment includes:

  • 17-inch alloy wheels;
  • a 12.9-inch central touchscreen;
  • Google built-in with navigation and voice assistance;
  • cloth-trimmed seats;
  • i-Activ all-wheel drive;
  • a blind spot monitoring system.

The GX does not receive a less powerful engine than the higher trims. It delivers the same 187 horsepower and the same all-wheel-drive system. It therefore represents a practical choice for daily driving, commuting between home and work, or families that want to keep their monthly payments under control.

2026 Mazda CX-5 GS: everyday versatility

The GS has an announced starting MSRP of $39,200. It includes the features of the GX while adding several practical conveniences, without reaching the more upscale level of the GT.

Its additional features include:

  • a power liftgate with programmable height;
  • 19-inch alloy wheels;
  • cloth and leatherette-trimmed seats;
  • a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat;
  • lumbar support;
  • an Active Driving Display projected onto the windshield.

This combination can be appealing to an active family. The power liftgate makes it easier to load groceries, school bags, or outdoor equipment. The power-adjustable seat and projected display also improve comfort during longer drives along Route 175 or around Lac Saint-Jean.

The GS generally represents the best balance for buyers who want more than the basic equipment while keeping the price below that of the GT.

2026 Mazda CX-5 GT: greater comfort and a more refined interior

The GT has an announced starting MSRP of $42,200. It is designed for drivers who place greater importance on interior ambiance, sound quality, and materials.

In addition to the features found in the GS, it offers:

  • 19-inch alloy wheels with a black metallic finish;
  • leather-trimmed seats;
  • a 12-speaker Bose audio system;
  • customizable ambient lighting in the front doors.

The GT may suit people who spend several hours a week in their vehicle or regularly take longer trips. The leather upholstery, Bose audio system, and ambient lighting do not change the CX-5’s performance, but they create a more refined environment.

A package with a panoramic sunroof is also available on the GT. Its announced starting MSRP is $44,200.

2026 Mazda CX-5 GT Premium: advanced technology comes first

The GT Premium designation refers to the best-equipped configuration in the lineup. In Mazda Canada’s pricing information, it is also presented as a GT equipped with the Premium Package. Its announced starting MSRP is $46,700.

Its main additional features include:

  • a 15.6-inch central touchscreen;
  • a 360° View Monitor;
  • panoramic, side, and under-vehicle views;
  • a driver personalization system;
  • facial recognition that restores the driver’s preferred settings;
  • traffic jam driving assistance;
  • a lane change assistance function.

The 360° View Monitor can make parking maneuvers easier in tight spaces or areas with limited visibility. The large display and personalization features are mainly intended for buyers who want the most complete technology experience available.

The GT Premium does not offer more power than the other trims. Its higher price is explained by its technology, equipment, and interior appointments rather than a different powertrain.

Which 2026 Mazda CX-5 matches your needs?

The choice can be summarized simply:

  • GX: for budget-conscious buyers, essential equipment, and standard all-wheel drive;
  • GS: for versatility, family-friendly conveniences, and everyday comfort;
  • GT: for leather upholstery, a more upscale atmosphere, and the Bose audio system;
  • GT Premium: for the larger display, 360-degree cameras, and advanced driver-assistance features.

The most expensive trim is not automatically the best choice for everyone. A GX can fully meet the needs of a driver who prioritizes the powertrain and all-wheel drive. The GS becomes appealing for family use, while the GT and GT Premium focus more heavily on comfort and technology.

What about the 2027 Mazda CX-5?

Mazda Canada currently markets the 2026 CX-5 in Canada. A separate 2027 CX-5 has not yet been added to the Canadian lineup.

Mazda has, however, confirmed that a new hybrid powertrain combining the upcoming Skyactiv-Z engine with a hybrid system developed by Mazda will launch in 2027. This announcement concerns the arrival of the hybrid powertrain, but Mazda Canada has not yet released the Canadian trims, pricing, fuel consumption ratings, or detailed specifications for this future model.

For buyers who want to purchase a vehicle now, the 2026 CX-5 therefore remains the new generation that is currently available and fully documented.
